IMPORTANT NOTE: The following information is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise and judgment of your physician, pharmacist or other healthcare professional. It should not be construed to indicate that use of the drug is safe, appropriate, or effective for you. Consult your healthcare professional before using this drug.
NYSTATIN LOZENGE (PASTILLE) – ORAL
(NYE-stat-in)
COMMON BRAND NAME: Mycostatin
USES: This medication is used to treat fungal infections of various organ systems of the body.
HOW TO USE: Hold the lozenge (pastille) in the mouth and allow it to dissolve slowly and completely. This may take 15 to 30 minutes. Swallow your saliva as the lozenge dissolves. Do not chew or swallow the lozenge whole. It may take from several days to several months to complete treatment. This depends upon the type and location of the infection. Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow the infection to continue, resulting in a return of the infection.
SIDE EFFECTS: You may experience diarrhea, nausea, gas, or vomiting as your body adjusts to the medication. If these symptoms persist or get worse contact your doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Lozenges (pastilles) may not be an appropriate dosage form for small children. Be sure to ask your doctor. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicine including nonprescription products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: This medication is prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it for another infection or share it with someone else. Another infection later on may require a different medicine.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not “double-up” the doses.
STORAGE: Store lozenges (pastilles) in the refrigerator. Keep away from heat.
