Typhoid Vaccine Oral Enteric Coated Capsule

TYPHOID VACCINE – ORAL ENTERIC-COATED CAPSULE

COMMON BRAND NAME: Vivotif Berna
USES: This medication is used to prevent typhoid fever.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth as directed, usually one capsule is taken every other day for 4 doses. Swallow the capsule whole with a cold or lukewarm drink one hour before a meal. Swallow capsule as soon as possible after placed in the mouth. Do not chew it or take it with warm or hot liquid. Replace any broken or cracked capsule. For this medication to be completely effective, your course of treatment should be completed 1 week before possible exposure to typhoid fever.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, diarrhea, skin rash, headache or mild fever may occur. If these symptoms continue or become bothersome notify your doctor. Notify your doctor if the following effects occur: breathing or swallowing difficulty, itching, swelling of face/eyes, sudden and severe tiredness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: illness, infection, allergies, undergoing radiation therapy. This medication should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this medication appears in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, especially: steroids (prednisone-like drugs), cancer drugs, immunosuppressants, sulfa drugs, antibiotics, other live vaccines. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: This vaccine is approximately 70% effective in preventing typhoid fever, depending partly on the degree of exposure. Take all necessary precautions to avoid contact or ingestion of potentially contaminated food or water.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. If you miss more than one dose, contact your doctor to establish a new dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store capsules under refrigeration at all times as directed. Keep away from heat and light. Do not store in the bathroom.
