AMOXICILLIN CHEWABLE TABLETS – ORAL
(uh-mox-eh-SILL-in)
COMMON BRAND NAME: Amoxil
USES: Amoxicillin treats a wide variety of bacterial infections.
HOW TO USE: Tablets must be chewed thoroughly and followed by a full glass of water (8oz or 240ml). Take this medication as directed by your doctor, usually every 8 or 12 hours. This drug may be taken with or without food. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals. Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve in a few days.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting during the first few days as your body adjusts to the medication. If these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor promptly. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. This medicine may cause temporary staining of the teeth. Proper brushing will usually remove this staining and may prevent it from occurring. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: blood disorders, kidney problems, allergies (especially to penicillins or other antibiotics). Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral or vaginal yeast infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms. Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you are pregnant. This medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may take, especially of: probenecid, disulfiram, tetracyclines. This drug may interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. Discuss using other methods of birth control with your doctor. This antibiotic may cause false positive results in diabetic urine testing using Clinitest. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
NOTES: This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection. A different medication may be necessary in those cases. Do not share this medication with others.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Keep at room temperature between 59 to 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from sunlight and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom.
