Chymopapain Injection

CHYMOPAPAIN – INJECTION
(KYE-mow-pap-AYE-in)
COMMON BRAND NAME: Chymodiactin
WARNING: Because severe, even fatal, allergic reactions, bleeding in the central nervous system, or severe spinal cord problems (such as paralysis) can occur with the use of chymopapain, this drug must be given very carefully and only in a hospital setting. If this medication accidentally leaks into surrounding tissue or is injected into the wrong area, the procedure will be stopped to prevent possible harm. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop signs of either of these events such as pain at the injection site, headache, rash, itching, breathing trouble, tingling or numbness sensations; or back or neck pain.
USES: This medication is used treat slipped (herniated) discs in the spine.
HOW TO USE: This medication is injected into the affected disc(s) by an experienced health care professional. It is used only once.
SIDE EFFECTS: Stomach upset, headache, dizziness, back pain, stiffness or back spasms may occur. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Leg pain, foot drop, tingling in the legs, numbness of the feet or toes, urinary retention and intestinal pain have also been reported. Immediately notify your doctor if you experience any of the following which may indicate an allergic reaction: rash, itching, breathing trouble, chest pain, irregular heartbeat. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: other illnesses, any allergies (especially to papaya or papain). This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if this medication appear in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication with your doctor. Serious, life-threatening reactions have been reported with use of this medication.
MISSED DOSE: This medication is administered only once. Repeat doses are not given.
STORAGE: Refrigerate between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 to 8 degrees C) until reconstituted. Must be used within two hours of reconstitution.
